The
Christian Student Center is a
college ministry located at 1821 Melrose Avenue, on the
University of Tennessee campus.
This ministry has been a major outreach of the Laurel Church of
Christ for more than 30 years. The goals of those who work with
the Center are to reach non-Christians with the love of Jesus
Christ, to help believing students develop an intimate
relationship with God, and to provide a community of faithful
support. Activities include participating in worship services and
devotionals at the church building and at the Center, communion,
prayer groups, large Bible classes at the building and at the
Center, small group Bible studies in students' and older members'
homes, seeker groups, local service projects such as serving lunch
at the Volunteer Ministry monthly, mission trips, retreats,
financial management classes, life skills training, social events,
and meals. Anyone at any place on his or her spiritual journey can
find a home at the CSC with welcome, encouragement
and love.
The CSC has a support committee made up of Laurel members who
provide encouragement to its mission by getting to know students,
organizing events in conjunction with the CSC staff and advising
the staff in planning each semester. The members' involvement
may include attending CSC retreats, devotionals and special events,
as well as having students into their homes. The mission of the CSC support ministry is to provide opportunities for students
to connect with Laurel members while in school and establish relationships
that reach beyond the college years. The goal is to provide students
encouragement and spiritual examples that will be a foundation
for their lives in years to come.
Integral to the CSC work is its Recruiting and Fundraising Team,
made up of Laurel members who serve as ambassadors for the CSC
work. The team's goals are:
- Recruiting
high school students to the CSC
- Expanding the
intern program for campus ministers
- Raising funds to support these efforts.
The work that needs to be done by members to accomplish these goals
includes:
-
Network with churches and youth ministries in Tennessee and the Southeast
to publicize the CSC and identify and recruit high school students planning
to attend UT
-
Maintain an up-to-date database of CSC alumni
-
Plan and keep alumni well-informed about alumni activities
-
Recruit intern candidates
-
Identify churches of Christ interested in starting a campus ministry
who might sponsor the internship program or specific interns
-
Solicit funds for the CSC and the internship program
The team
needs a coordinator for the first task above and to know names of
anyone interested in becoming a campus intern or churches who might
be interested in contributing to the CSC and intern program. Team
members also need help raising funds for this ministry. Team members
are: Kelly Milam, Keith Carver, Jon Russell, Muriel Brown, Joe Johnson,
Caroline Evans, Carol Bell and Mike Buckley.
